The best Dutch wine? You can taste it in Limburg!

Dutch wine? Is that drinkable, while the grapes are growing in our cold frog country climate? Especially when the grapes ripen on the sun-drenched slopes of the Limburg hills. The vines flourish on the poor chalky soils and the traditional process of wine-making is being picked up again by numerous winegrowers. Come and have a look and taste in Limburg!

In Limburg, wine making is back again. About two thousand years ago, the Romans brought this tradition to these parts from the Mediterranean. After a small ice age around 1600 and later Napoleon stopped the winery, the craft was picked up again in the 1970s by some pioneers. Meanwhile, Limburg has changed from a pioneer to a frontrunner in the Dutch winery. Are you coming to taste? We tell you where that is possible!

Couple in Vineyard

Wijndomein Kapèlkeshof in Grashoek

Two red grape varieties and two white grape varieties are grown with great love on this small-scale vineyard. They make many wines from it. During a tour of the vineyard you are completely taken into the process and there is a tasting afterwards. The presence of a restaurant and a golf course makes it easy to extend your visit in a fun and original way.

Wijngoed Thorn

Wijngoed Thorn

The white town of Thorn is so romantic: the winery fits perfectly into the picture. This is where even some of the best Dutch wines come from... The wine is produced in a recognized terroir: the Maasvallei. It not only produces sublime wines, but also offers wonderful views. Best enjoyed with a local glass of wine in hand. Come and experience wine making and tasting in Thorn!

Tip: There is even a wine route that you can take by bike, here you will pass various wine domains, including Wijngoed Thorn.

Domein De Wijngaardsberg

Domein de Wijngaardsberg in Ulestraten

This vineyard is known to have had vines planted in the very same spot in 968, what a history! They were replanted in 2002 and it immediately became apparent that this was still a good place for viticulture. 'Making wine in the service of nature' is the motto, but the processing is done with state-of-the-art equipment. Come and take a look at this special mix of old and new at one of the most beautiful vineyards in Limburg.

Wijngoed Fromberg at Ubachsberg

Wijngoed Fromberg in Ubachsberg

The highest vineyard in the Netherlands not only provides beautiful views, but also a good wine grape harvest. Carmen and Marcel Soomers have experienced this at their winery for almost three decades. Fromberger wines have built up a good reputation in the region and beyond. In this vineyard you can not only take a tour with a wine tasting or book an extensive package, you can also get married there!

Barrel and trees in Wittemer Vineyard Wahlwiller

Wittemer Wijngaard Wahlwiller

They call it a piece of paradise on earth and we understand why. The location of the Wittemer Wijngaard is stunningly beautiful, in the middle of the Heuvelland. In the 1970s, GP Schepel pioneered with the first vines on the terraces of the Sinselbeek: the Wittemer Wijngaard was born. During a guided tour you will learn all about the winery in Wahlwiller wine village and you will also learn more about the local flora and fauna and the prevailing microclimate here. Of course there is also tasting!

Glasses of wine at wine estate St.Martinus

Wijngaard St. Martinus in Vijlen

Stan Beurskens, the winemaker back vineyard St. Martinus, is an internationally renowned oenologist. He helped many of the Limburg vineyards with the start-up and with advice. He raises his own vineyard to a top level. He is not called a grape tamer for nothing. Not only has he fully mastered the winery, he is also working on making his domain completely self-sufficient. You want to see this next level vineyard with your own eyes.

The Apostelhoeve

De Apostelhoeve in Maastricht

It is the oldest and one of the largest wine estates in the Netherlands. On top of the Louwberg, the vines of the Apostelhoeve absorb all the sun they can catch. Special about this vineyard: there is a farm and a quarry. The vinification process of the wines takes place in the farm and you can go for a wine tasting. Below the farm is a marl quarry, which shows that the vines thrive here on a limestone soil.
